          A Penguin Named Patience

A Penguin Named Patience by Suzanne Lewis Patience is a South African penguin. She is small at roughly 6 pounds and approximately 20 inches tall; but at 24 years old, she is the "penguin in charge" of the penguin exhibit at New Orleans's Audubon Aquarium of the Americas. On August 29, 2005, Hurricane Katrina hits, devastating the city and surrounding areas with its catastrophic winds and flooding. The aquarium is severely damaged. With no electricity or relief in sight, the temperature in the aquarium reaches dangerously high degrees, putting the penguins in peril. Patience, and the 18 other penguins, along with some of the other zoo animals, must leave their home and their favorite human, Tom, the penguin keeper. Tom drives his penguins to Baton Rouge where an airplane transfers them to the Monterey Bay Aquarium in California. Here the penguins will recuperate and live until they can return home to New Orleans. After nine long months away from Tom and their home, the aquarium is finally restored. And Patience, who has been patient, and her penguins return to New Orleans to a cheering homecoming.

          A Tree in the Sea

A Tree in the Sea by Holly Kern (Author) and Blaine Kern (Illustrator) Colorful, bright, and engaging, world-renowned float designer Blaine Kern's illustrations capture the whimsy and fun of wife Holly Kern's fanciful story about overcoming differences and the joys of friendship. In singsong rhyming verse, Holly Kern takes readers on a dreamlike tour under the sea. There, dreamy wanderers meet a tree that is totally out of its element. Rooted to the sea floor yet surrounded by the wonders of the ocean, the tree realized how lonely life is without friends. But it is hard to make friends when we are different! As the tree slowly begins to develop friendships with the various creatures that share the deep blue, the newly formed relationships are threatened by a group of toothy sharks. With courage and strength, the tree uses its differences to save the day. In typical Mr. Mardi Gras fashion, the aquatic friends come together to form a parade celebrating their friendship. About the Author Holly and Blaine Kern were both born and raised in New Orleans, Louisiana. A whimsical married couple separated in age by nearly fifty years, they have been together since 2002. Holly Kern is a former choreographer, competitive dance coach, and dance studio owner and has mentored children of all ages. She formerly produced an annual dance production staged at the Orpheum Theater in New Orleans. Holly has had a flair for writing from a young age and cites Dr. Seuss and Shel Silverstein as her early influences. Blaine Kern is a legendary artist who founded Kern Studios as well as the popular tourist attraction Mardi Gras World. Known as Mr. Mardi Gras for revolutionizing Mardi Gras, Blaine has produced events, parades, sculptures, and attractions for theme parks worldwide, including Disney World and Universal Studios....
